Negosentro | The Great Era of Economic Growth: The Continues Growth of Tourism in The Philippines This 2024 | Tourism is an important economic industry around the world because it contributes significantly to a country’s economy and development. It comprises a wide range of activities and services that attract domestic and international visitors, generating significant cash, creating jobs, and developing infrastructure. Beyond its economic impact, tourism encourages cultural interchange, international understanding, and the preservation of natural and cultural assets. This basic overview emphasizes tourism’s varied role in influencing a nation’s socioeconomic landscape.
The tourism industry has cemented its vital role as a pillar of growth and economic recovery in the post-pandemic era, with 6.21 million jobs created for Filipinos in 2023, an exponential increase that brings it closer to its 6.3 million target employment in tourism for 2028, or nearly four years ahead, according to the approved National Tourism Development Plan (NTDP) 2023-2028.
This is based on the Philippine Statistics Authority (PSA)’s recent Philippine Tourism Satellite Accounts (PTSA), which were released on Tuesday (June 18). Specifically, employment in tourism-related industries increased by 6.4%, from 5.84 million in 2022 to 6.21 million in 2023. Last year, employment in the tourist industry accounted for 12.9 percent of overall employment in the country.
Similarly, according to the research, tourism had the highest growth rate, accounting for 8.6 percent of the country’s GDP. Tourism Direct Gross Value Added (TDGVA) reached P2.09 trillion in 2023, the highest level since the PSA began recording data in 2000. The figures are 47.9 percent greater than the P1.41 trillion TDGVA in 2022, which contributed 6.4 percent to GDP. The TDGVA is the gross value added by tourism industries and other sectors of the economy that directly service visitors.
